Overview

The Committee for Public Counsel Services, the Massachusetts public defender agency, is seeking a Facilities Technician to assist with maintaining Agency facilities and following Agency facilities policies and procedures to ensure employee workspaces are safe and problem-free.

 

Travel for this position is expected up to 70% of working hours in order to support the more than 20 office locations around the Commonwealth.  Applicants must be able work with and move heavy furniture or objects up to 50 lbs.

AGENCY OVERVIEW

 

CPCS is the state agency in Massachusetts responsible for providing an attorney when the state or federal constitution or a state statute requires the appointment of an attorney for a person who cannot afford to retain one.  The agency provides representation in criminal, delinquency, youthful offender, family regulation, guardianship, mental health, sexually dangerous person, and sex offender registry cases, as well as in appeals and post-conviction and post-judgment proceedings related to those matters.

 

The clients we represent are diverse across every context imaginable and bring many unique cultural dimensions to the matters we address. This reality creates a critical need for CPCS staff to be culturally competent and able to work well with people of different races, ethnicities, genders and/or sexual orientation identities, abilities, and limited English proficiency, among other protected characteristics.

 

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

 

The Facilities Department aids in the delivery of the Agency’s mission to serve our clients through creating a physical work environment that is welcoming and safe for staff and clients alike.  The Facilities Department accomplishes this through the procurement, design, construction and outfitting of Agency office locations in the many communities we serve.  CPCS Facilities prides itself on being a solid foundation on which the Agency stands while it advocates for those of us who are unable to do so for themselves.

 

POSITION OVERVIEW

 

The Facilities Technician assists the Facilities Manager in maintaining all Agency facilities and Facility policies and procedures which includes all physical property for the more than 20 office locations across the Commonwealth to ensure employee workspaces are problem-free and safe for all Agency employees. This position will focus on the day-to-day tasks required to be performed across all offices, including providing on-site office inspection assessments of existing facilities and equipment, light repair/handywork, and scheduling contractors and service vendors as required.

 

The Facilities Technician is expected to have a working understanding of general maintenance and experience with tools, physically able to lift and move heavy equipment, objects, or furniture, and basic IT infrastructure systems knowledge.

 

The Facilities Technician will need to be able to communicate effectively and provide excellent customer service to all staff in the physical properties of the Agency.  This position will interact with all levels of the Agency, from Administrative Staff and Attorneys in Charge of offices to regional Managing Directors and Senior Management Team members.

 

This position is expected to travel regularly to the more than 20 office locations around the Commonwealth.  Travel is estimated up to 70% of working hours. Emergencies may require evening or weekend attention.

 

The Facilities Technician reports to the Facilities Manager.

Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

 

The successful candidate must have: 

  •  Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalency;
  • At least two (2) years of facilities experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant education, training, and experience;
  • Valid driver’s license and a reliable personal vehicle for transportation on a reimbursable basis. Travel is estimated at up to 70% of working hours. All travel will take place within the Commonwealth; and,
  • Must be able to work with and move heavy furniture or objects up to 50 lbs;
  • Access to home internet access sufficient to work remotely. 

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS

 

  • Experience with construction management, facilities management, or project management strongly preferred;
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills;
  • Ability to work efficiently and independently;
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Access, Outlook, and Visio);
  • Experience working within a team setting;
  • Experience with IT systems including Network infrastructure and cabling and IP phone systems;
  • Experience working with a work order system;
  • Experience working independently in on site locations;
  • Experience transporting, moving and fixing large furniture; and,
  • Prior MA state government experience.

Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The duties of the Facilities Technician include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Upholding Agency facilities policies, procedures, and codes of conduct while on-site;
  • Performing basic office furniture repairs and installations such as troubleshooting electric height adjustable desks, repairing or replacing file cabinet locks, and installing wall track and shelving systems;
  • Handling light maintenance on-site such as replacing bulbs, installing white-boards, light painting and patching, etc.
  • Installing basic conference room Audio/Visual equipment, troubleshooting, and performing upkeep;
  • Reporting to the Facilities Manager on current facility related request statuses
  • Maintaining ongoing contact with property management and reporting facilities related concerns to the Facilities Manager;
  • Completing biannual office inspections for all offices to continue to improve working conditions at each site and scheduling preventive maintenance tasks;
  • Assisting the Facility Manager in analyzing short and long-term Agency needs for office furniture and equipment;
  • Working closely with IT in network infrastructure installations;
  • Assisting with maintaining furniture and equipment annual inventory for the agency;
  • Utilizing online ticket systems, portals, and applications to track and respond to facility related requests;
  • Working with and moving heavy furniture or objects up to 50lbs;
  • Transporting furniture and equipment in larger vehicles such as cargo vans;
  • Evening and weekend emergency response as needed; and,
  • Other duties as assigned;
